Bull Moose Standing Guard (Square, no Gallery Border)
With this image, I would like to share a bit of 'old photographer' learning and philosophy. Once in a great while, you will be rewarded with an image that is both a grand accident and an equally grand plan. I never thought I would ever be this close (20 feet, 6.5 meters) to a wild, living, bull moose. I am not recommending that you get this close - but, my point is all about planning and thinking about what you are seeing in the wild.
My friends and I were watching a pair of bull moose in late afternoon near Moose Junction (north of Jackson, Wyoming, just north of the airport). After an hour or more, we could see the track they were taking, which was to the south.
A number of tourists and photographers had stopped to see what we were looking at, and eventually quite a crowd had gathered. As we often do when a crowd gathers, we tried to predict where the two moose would be one hour in the future, and we moved to a place near that spot. The crowd did not follow, thinking we had enough photos that we left for the day.
I consider an extremely lucky 'estimate' of an animal's location one hour in the future to be something within a quarter mile (400 m). In this case, we hit a bull's eye, literally. The two bull moose ended up at exactly the spot we were at. I took this shot from the opposite side of our vehicle, keeping the vehicle between me and the moose.
So, plan ahead and take a chance, cautiously. Once in a while, you will be rewarded, but not always or even most of the time. Even more importantly, keep a safe distance from wild animals. they do not think like you an I do and they will do things beyond your imagination.
